As part of their ongoing commitment to local community engagement, 3 members of Bristol’s Royal Air Force Careers team are attempting to raise £10,000 for Kingswood charity “Hop, Skip and Jump” as well as the “Help For Heroes” charity on Thursday 6th May 2010.
If you would like to attend, please come along to the centre
at the beginning to show your support
Flight Lieutenant Antony Elliott, Corporal Adrian Smith-Hays and Mr Neil Prowse will be attempting to complete a 220 mile endurance event in just 24 Hrs. The event will require not just physical fitness and stamina, but also a huge degree of mental toughness to keep going when fatigue sets in. Departing from Bristol they plan to cycle the 75 miles to Exeter, before embarking upon a 40 mile forced march over Dartmoor, finally rounding off with a 105 mile cycle to Lands End! The challenge will hopefully generate interest in a vital local charity that, like so many, relies completely on the fundraising efforts of a small group of people.
Hop Skip and Jump South West is a registered charity providing support for families that have children with special needs, both physically and mentally. They are self supporting and rely on donations to raise the £200,000 needed each year to keep this centre running. The centre was established in February 2003 to provide specialist support and supervised play for children and young people with any special need, whilst providing families and carers with respite and a range of services. The charity aims to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities by building their confidence, social skills and self esteem through freedom of adventure, play, open spaces, fun and laughter. Thousands of visitors and children benefit from Hop Skip & Jump South West each year, with visitor numbers showing a steady increase (2008 saw 12,000 visitors, an increase from 9,000 in 2007).
Flight Lieutenant Antony Elliott from RAF Careers office said:
“It is a privilege to be involved with a charity such as Hop Skip and Jump. We are always extremely keen to engage with the local community in any capacity and if we can do that through fundraising initiatives then so much the better. The challenge is going to be extremely physically tough, but it will be well worth it if we can provide Hop Skip and Jump with some greatly needed equipment.” |
